About Marriage Allowance
Marriage Allowance is available to married couples and civil partners where one person earns less than the personal allowance (£12,570) and the other is a basic rate taxpayer (earning between £12,571 and £50,270).
The lower earner transfers £1,260 of their personal allowance to the higher earner, reducing their tax bill by up to £252 per year. You can backdate claims for up to 4 previous tax years.
How to Apply
Apply online at gov.uk/marriage-allowance. You will need your National Insurance numbers and proof of identity. HMRC will adjust the higher earner's tax code automatically.
