Finding (and paying less for) parking in the UK
Parking is one of the most stressful and unpredictable parts of any journey — especially in city centres, near stations, hospitals and event venues, where spaces are scarce and prices can be eye-watering. Seeing what is nearby before you set off, and knowing your options, saves time circling the block and money at the meter.
Types of car park, and what they cost
- Council / on-street — pay-and-display or app payment (RingGo, PayByPhone). Usually cheapest for short stays but time-limited.
- Multi-storey & surface car parks — operators like NCP, Q-Park and council-run sites; better for longer stays, priced by the hour or day.
- Supermarket car parks — often free for a couple of hours while you shop; watch the time limit and ANPR cameras.
- Park & Ride — park on the edge of a city and take a bus or tram in; far cheaper than central parking for a day out.
- Pre-booked private spaces — driveways and private bays booked in advance (e.g. via JustPark), frequently the cheapest option near busy venues and airports.
How to pay less
- Pre-book near events and airports — turning up on the day at a stadium, airport or hospital is almost always the most expensive way to park. Booking a guaranteed space ahead can cost a fraction of the drive-up rate.
- Use Park & Ride for full days in a city — a few pounds versus £15–£30+ for central all-day parking.
- Check the time limit — most parking fines (PCNs) come from overstaying free supermarket or retail-park limits, not from not paying.
- Compare a short walk — a car park one street back from the main destination is often dramatically cheaper.
FAQ
Is the parking data live?
Locations come from OpenStreetMap, a community map of the UK, so coverage is broad but details like price and live space availability are not guaranteed. Always check the signs on arrival.
Can I book a space in advance?
For busy destinations — airports, stadiums, hospitals and city centres — pre-booking a guaranteed private space or official car park ahead of time is usually cheaper and removes the risk of arriving to a full car park.
What if I get a parking ticket I think is unfair?
Council PCNs and private parking charges can both be appealed. Keep photos and your ticket, and follow the appeal route printed on the notice within the stated time limit.
Parking locations are from OpenStreetMap and shown in good faith; prices, availability and restrictions change — always check on-site signage. This is a free guide, not financial advice.
