How UK Stamp Duty Works
Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is paid on property purchases in England and Northern Ireland. It works on a tiered system — you only pay the higher rate on the portion of the price within each band, similar to income tax.
First-time buyers pay no stamp duty on the first £425,000 (on properties up to £625,000). If you already own a property and buy an additional one, a 5% surcharge applies across all bands.
Scotland has LBTT and Wales has LTT — different rates apply there.
